Question: What would you say to girl who wants to be a judge?

Answer: First, go to law school. Almost all courts require that judges be lawyers, and even if they don't, it will make you a better judge if you are a lawyer by training.

Second, get involved. The more involved you are, the more people you meet, and supportive relationships in the community are often imperative to getting elected or appointed to the bench. Involvement in community groups and volunteer organizations will also help you develop compassion and understanding about the people that will eventually appear in your courtroom. This will surely help you be a better judge.

Third, always behave as though you already are a judge. If you are known as honest, hardworking, intelligent, well-prepared, and sincere, when your name comes up as a candidate for a judgeship, people will immediately support you. On the other hand, if you have a bad reputation in the community, it will probably hurt your chances, if not destroy them.

Finally, don't ever think that being a girl means that you can't be a judge. Society has changed considerably over the years. People have come to realize that believing in old stereotypes meant a lot of wasted brainpower. Today, smart electors and governors realize that the most important qualities in judges are their intelligence and ability to do the job. If you prove these attributes, you can be anything you want to be.
