Question: Hi I have a 7-year-old daughter who just recently started to steal from us. What I would like to know is there anything we can do, maybe a tour of a juvenile detention center, so that she can see if she continues this behavior, what the consequences can be? Please advise. Thank you!

Answer:

Rarely are tours allowed at juvenile detention centers in Arizona because of the need to protect the confidentiality of the matter. While some high schools do participate in programs that at times are able to see these facilities in select counties and never when juveniles are in residence, these sort of opportunities are not available to young children.

However, you can experience a "Virtual Tour" of a juvenile detention center on LawForKids.org that includes audio and video.

Additionally, it might be useful to research some parenting resources that address the topic of children and theft. Some helpful websites that include articles on this issue are:
KidsHealth.org
Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
National Center for Juvenile Justice (NCJJ).
