Question: If I catch someone stealing my property can I restrain them and tie them up put them in my car and drive to the police station and not get in trouble?
Answer: The law allows people to protect their property, but only with a limited and reasonable amount of force. And, the law never allows the use of deadly force to protect property.
What this means is that it is reasonable for you to tell someone to stop, shout at them, or maybe even hold them until the police can come to you. These would all be considered 'limited and practical' amounts of force. However, tying someone up and putting them in a car would most likely be considered too much force. If the amount of force you use to protect your property is found to be unreasonable, then you could get yourself in trouble for assault, kidnapping, or even worse charges.
