Question: What offenses are handled by Indian courts?

Answer: Criminal cases brought against Native Americans for offenses that are alleged to have occurred on the reservation. Criminal cases brought in a Tribal Court are brought by the prosecutor for the Tribal government for violation of Tribal law. These cases are usually for misdemeanors, such as assault, serious traffic offenses like driving under the influence of alcohol, and domestic violence. Very serious criminal cases that arise on a reservation may be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney in federal court. These cases can include murder, rape, or violence involving a firearm.
