Question: What is the law against 'burning' a music artists CD?

Answer: It is against U.S. and international copyright laws to copy an original work created by someone else without permission. The copyright laws apply to music CD's. The same copyright laws also make it illegal to copy movies -- as you know, if you have ever read those warnings that appear at the beginning (and end) of a rented videotape or DVD. Likewise, if you check the cover of any music CD that you purchase, you will see that it contains a notice under U.S. and international copyright laws warning against making copies without permission.

It is wrong because it is stealing. An artist makes money because they earn it. They spent countless hours creating the song and promoting it and to have you steal it because they make money off of thier work is just wrong and lazy! It would be the same as someone taking your coat because it is cheaper to take your coat than it is to buy one.

I think that burning CD's should not be illegal cause alot of the CD's that I get come from friends who've burned a CD and given it to me.And it's not like it's doing any harm or anything. I just don't get it.

where I come from...a good cd costs $20-25...I'm only 16 and I can't afford to be throwing away money like that all the time....I buy around 3 cd's a year.....and I know that my parents don't like it either...singers make millions of dollars from one cd and they generally produce more than 1.....I think it should be legal.....if they really wanted people to hear their music they wouldn't care about the money...they would just be happy that people like their music...If someone like the songs on an artists 1st cd they might end up buying the rest of them...just an opinnion

United States law allows for the legitimate owner of a copyrighted work to create a backup of that work for archival purposes. However, there are several limitations to this: 1.If the copyrighted article is sold/given to another person, they must be given BOTH the original and the backup. The first owner MAY NOT sell/distribute the original and keep the backup or vice versa. 2.Both the original and the backup may not be used at the same time. Therefore, to create a copy of a copyrighted work(such as a music cd) that you own and use it for your own private use is acceptable. To crea

I think that burning CDs should totally be legal. I mean, artists make a ton of money from other things, so whats the big deal if they dont get an extra 35 cents? Also, in the long run, you can save a lot of money from just burning a CD instead of bying one, cause the average CD costss about $10.00-$16.00, right? So, why spend that much on a CD, when you can just burn one for free? I guess I feel that burning a CD is cheaper than buying one.
