Question: How do I get a Public Defender?

Answer: In order to get a public defender, you must have first committed a crime. Then you will have to fill out a financial statement with the County Clerk showing that your financial position prevents you from hiring a private attorney. Once the Court is satisfied you cannot afford to hire an attorney, one will be appointed to you from the Public Defender's Office. Public Defenders are only appointed in criminal cases and never in civil lawsuits.

I got a Public Defender and he didn't do anything. In fact I went to a court date and he didn't even know the date got changed. Equal representation...

I think that public defenders are public pretenders. They work for the court and dont do a thing for you. Mine hasent called me yet, I have to keep calling her (it's been over 3 weeks) and then hopefully she will get in contact with me before my next court hearing. Plus, their not free either. The judge does make you pay a fee for seing one.
