Question:

Why is marijuana illegal?

Answer:

Something is illegal when laws are passed prohibiting it. Marijuana is against the law because there are specific laws which make it illegal.

To understand why certain things are illegal, we should understand two basic principles: (1) where laws come from; (2) why one thing, rather than another, may have a law against it.

Laws are rules which are enforced by a controlling authority or Government. In the United States, we have a Constitution, which is considered the highest body of law, or rules, in the land. The US Constitution creates three areas of government: 1. a President to oversee the country; 2. a Legislature to enact and create rules of law; and 3. a Court system to test and enforce the rules and laws enacted by the legislature.

Laws are usually made with the idea of protecting people or things. For instance, laws against driving too fast are safety-oriented and are intended to protect people. Laws against chopping down native cactuses are intended to protect the desert plants, rather than protecting people.

Before a law on anything is created, people must agree that a law is necessary. For some things, most people agree there is no need for a rule or law to control it. On the other hand, when enough people agree that a law is needed, then one may be created by the legislature. Legislatures are made up of representatives elected by people.

If something is determined to be dangerous, and people are doing it in spite of its dangers, then the legislature may create a law to prevent people from doing it and the court system may punish people who break the law.

So, marijuana, like most things which are illegal, has been determined to be a danger to the people, and because some people use it, sell it or possess it in spite of its dangers, laws were created by the legislature to prevent people from using, selling or possessing it and to punish people who violate the law.

Marijuana? A danger to the people? Ha! Find someone with guns that is loaded on alcohol and then maybe you'll see a danger! Yet, for some reason by this guy's definition, alcohol and guns must not be a danger to the people.

Legalize pot. if you are worried about people who smoke it putting others in danger. put restrictions on it like with alcohol make it illegal to use in public, most of us that use don't mind chillin at home and tokin, and if it makes you feel better, put an age restriction on it as well like 18 or 21 as they do with cigarettes or alcohol. and besides the more you tell us we can't or aren't allowed to. the more we grow of our own and cut the taxes you could be collecting from it. And when it comes to killing brain cells, so does alcohol, tobacco, even the pollution in the air you all breath.

It amazes me how every person who is "pro-weed" managed to slaughter the English vocabulary. Pot is not legal because it does inhibit your brain from responding properly to the things and events around you. Just like any other drug it may have it's medicinal uses if used with caution but it should not be handed out like candy, especially to children who are not mature enough to think before they write or at least spell check their own writting. Finally I suggest that anyone without and M.D at the end of their name do some serious medical research before speaking out of their gluteous maximus

I dont think that weed should be illegal alcohol gets u messed up and that is not illegal. Cigerates ruin your lungs and that is not illegal. So then y is weed illegal? I think that that marijuana should be sold in the gas station like cigerates but there should be an age limit just like cigerates and alcohol. There is a age on voting and drinking and smoking and that age is when the government thinks you r responsible enough to handle those things so y not sell it and make it legal and just have a age limit~!?

Yes the government could put a tax on marijuana if they made it legal, but who gets to pay for people's health care when they've screwed themselves up?!?! Those of us who are still able to work. That's a bunch of crap. Smoke, get stoned, whatever, but don't make me pay for your dumb habits.
