Question: Is it illegal to own or possess a malee weapon, such as a sword or kendo stick?

Answer: Laws vary from state to state concerning these weapons. For example, in Michigan, there appears to be no law against owning these weapons, but there are various laws preventing a person from carrying them as weapons. MCL 764.1.f states that a juvenile cannot carry or possess a club or any object likely to cause death when used as a weapon (MCL 764.1.f). Both a sword and kendo stick could logically be considered to be objects that could cause death. If a minor in Michigan were found to be carrying a sword or kendo stick, he or she would probably be presumed to be carrying it as a weapon until proven otherwise.

Laws concerning melee weapons can be incredibly asinine, because unlike firearms, they don't have any kind of NRA body defending them. Nunchaku are some of the most legislated weapons on the books.

I took a guss on how, and made a set of shinais for some friends and almost pulled my fingers off. It's been a while since I've seen a profesional made one so they turned out pretty flimsy, but better than I expected.*grins* Heres a tip to others who are going to make a shinai from scrach: don't make three in a row! *rubs own blisterd hands*

What about when your sparring partner made them. My friend is an excellent carver, woodworkr, whatever, and he carved two long-swords(blunt end and edges), for me and his to practice sword play with, now one time i got him really bad in the ribs, which pertubed me, and he hit me with the flat side of the oak-sword, and dislocated my jaw, i couldn't eat without pain for almost a month

.....depending on what state you live the laws vary. I attended a recent wrestling show, & The Sandman formerly from ECW was on the card. I had one of his old Singapore canes/kendo stick....whatever, anyway....after the show I was stopped by Security who informed me that I was in violation of the law carrying my souvenir to my car. Go figure..

A shinai is indeed a trainng sword made of four pieces of bamboo, but the term "Kendo Stick" is nonsense. The only club-like training weapon i can think of offhand is a Bokken.
