Question: What punishment would I get for threatening to kill someone online?
Answer: The whole issue of the law and the internet is so new and always expanding, but the internet is just another medium for communicating.
Although there is no specific Arizona Law which deals with threatening a person online, it will be interesting to see how the courts deal with it. In general threats and intimidation is a class 1 misdemenor under Arizona law. Any class 1 misdemenor carries a sentence of up to 6 months in jail. Therefore, it would not be surprising if the courts simply applied this to a threat made online since it could be interpreted that a threat is a threat, no matter how communicated.
If so the maximum punishment would be 6 months in jail. However, if it is a first offense, a plea agreement for probation could be negotiated.

A threat is a threat no matter how it is made. A child or adult, either one should be punished somehow for making any kind of threat online. Some may not need to be taken seriously, but what about the ones that need to be? All threats need to be at least looked into by by someone in law enforcement. Let them decide how serious the threat is and if they have reason to believe that person will or will not act upon their threat.

Most people that are online act differently online than they do at home. You can get in trouble at home, yet parents do not find out about many things that kids do/say online. I would not take a threat of being killed likely from someone online. Perhaps if it was continuous and detailed, then I may speak back. I doubt I would go as far as to notify the athourities though.
