Question: I want to start a business, what is the law on placing signs on street corners and telephone poles?

Answer: In general, it's illegal to place any type of advertisement on public right-of-ways. Each city (e.g. Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, etc) has it's own laws prohibiting such activities. For example, the City of Phoenix restricts people posting posters or other notices:
  • No person can place a poster on a sidewalk, curb or other public place
  • No person can place a poster on someone else’s property without first receiving permission
  • No person can place a poster near any public right-of-way
  • Anyone breaking this law may get a fine between $500 and $2500.
(Ord. No. G-717, § 1; Ord. No. G-4069, § 1, passed 1-21-1998, eff. 2-20-1998)
