Question: How old do I have to be to choose who I live with?

Answer: The judge makes the final decision in custody cases. Sometimes the judge will ask to talk to the kids and sometimes the parents request that the judge talk to the children involved. Usually, if a judge decides that a child should live with just one parent, the judge will order visits with the other parent.

Im 18 years old, I have been living with my dad for 5 years now, but it wasnt always that way. She kept telling me that I didn't have a good enough reason to move in with my dad and I don't like my stepdad. When you turn 15-16 do you have a say in the courts with who you want to live with?Is it like that in every state?

My niece has been living with my husband and I for 3 months because her mom has been ill. She doesn't want to go back. She wants us to get custody of her. Is this a dificult process, if it can be proven that the mothers lifestyle and home life is not fit for her? She use to hurt herself when she lived there and was depressed. She has finally reached happiness. She has 3 siblings as well. What can I do? She really wants to stay with us.
