Question: Can a parent spank their kid at any age before 18 years old? I don't mean beat the kid just spank them?

Answer: Arizona law does provide that parents and persons acting as parents, including school personnel, may use corporal punishment (spanking). The punishment must be reasonable and not excessive.

In Arizona a child is anyone under the age of 18, and until you are 18, you are under the care, custody and control of your parent or legal guardian.

The Arizona Legislature passed a new law that went into effect on August 12, 2005 that allows minors to be emancipated. However, emancipation is a very difficult process that few are eligible for. See the LawForKids.org Laws page for more information.

spanking not beating a child is sometimes the only thing they will listen too. I have a child that has been so defient to teachers broke a kids arm pushed another kid down a flight of stairs beat another child up because some kids dared him too. I have tried everything now all I have left is spanking him he is 13 and believes he is invinsible. I am at witts end i do not know what else to do.He will either end up in juvy or someone will end up hurting him, so for those that say spanking is horrible what in tarnation would you do?

Everybody, who spanks children, should be ashamed.Only bad parents spank and they do not love their children. It really should be banned.Beating other people is wrong, and beating the own kids is o.k????? Are you crazy???? It´s the year 2006, and not 1869.

If you have to keep spanking, then it is not working. You can teach through patience and education. I have 2 grown daughters and a 7 yr ADHD son whom I do not spank. Both girls attend college and work and my son never gets in trouble for hitting yelling pushing or biting. Punishment does not work. EL Thorndike look it up (truncated law of effect) punishment only provides immediate compliance and not learning.
