Question:

I live in Arizona, is there no possibility of me requesting legal emancipation without parental consent?

Answer:

Read more about Emancipation in the Laws section of this website.

Arizona law makes your parents responsible for your well-being until you turn 18 years old.

The only exceptions to this are if you are legally married (if you are under 18, parents must approve of you being married) or join the military (parents must usually give their approval if you join the military before you are 18).

In cases where parents are not providing for your well-being (like cases of abuse or neglect), the state government can sever a parent's rights. This means that due to evidence of abuse or neglect of a child, the state declares that a parent is not fufilling their legal responsibility to provide for a child's well-being. In cases such as this, a parent's rights over a child may be severed.

This is not emancipation though, as the child is taken care of by the Arizona foster care system until they are 18.

I SPEAK FOR A LOT OF TEENEGERS THAT JUST WANT TO BE EMANCIPATED EVEN IF THERE IS NO SIGN OF ABUSE. MY MOM JUST YELLS FOR NOTHING EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY WAKING HOUR. THEREFORE IF I FEEL THAT I AM INDEPENDENT ENOUGH AND MATURE ENOUGH TO BE ON MY OWN THEN I SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE EMANCIPATED. THERE ARE MORE AND MORE TEENAGERS THAT FEEL THAT THEY DON'T WANT TO STAY IN THEIR HOMES BECAUSE OF UN CALLED FOR YELLING. I GET YELLED AT FOR NOT GOING TO THE GASS STATION BEFORE 9:00 PM THEN SHE WANTS TO BLAME IT ON ANYTHING THAT IS NEW IN MY LIFE. THAT IS STUPID. WHEN I STARTED CHEERLEADING ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO

As a mother of a daughter who is somewhat "out of control", I wish she were able to be emancipated. She hates living at home, she refuses to obey by any rules of the house, and she's causing her brother and I great distress. I'm wondering why someone who won't obey her parents rules can't be emancipated. The laws are useless if they're unenforceable. They can't make my daughter obey!!! I'd prefer if she just left home. (She's 17. I'm not sure I'd be saying this if she were only 14 or 15).

I work thirty hours a week, I pay my own bills, I pay for doctor vists and other things to that extent. My boss at work will leave me in charge over someone that is well over eighteen. I have had countless people tell me that I am more mature than most twenty one year olds they know. But yet at this one place I need my parent to sign me in before I can sell the clothes that I payed for. I will not say that the law is stupid, I will say these matter should be judged on a individual basis, and not on the thought that all teenagers are driven by hormones and emotion.

That law is stupid. There should be emancipation for people that want it, even if there is no abuse. Some kids just want to be independent and be on their own.
