American Bar Association - Constitution Day activities - Online home of the Conversations on the Constitution program presented by the American Bar Association.  Complete with interactive activities, debate, and lesson plans.

American Judicature Society -

Welcome to this interactive addition to the American Judicature Society's website. It reflects our continuing efforts to educate the public about the workings of the judicial branch of government. We invite you to download the lesson plans described below, use them in your classroom, and then suggest revisions to the plans and share your comments and questions about them.



AT & T Learning Network - The site offers an array of curriculum-related materials for educators, librarians and families. AT & T also supports TeachersNetwork.org a site that Includes/ searchable resources for teachers.

Bill of Rights Institute - Lessons on the Constitution -

Free lesson plans and activities for Constitution Day.



Blue Web'n - This searchable database of outstanding Internet learning sites categorizes entries by content, audience, and type (lessons, activities, projects, resources, references, & tools).

Class Action Program -

This program, offered by the S.C. Supreme Court twice a month from September through June, is designed to bring middle school and high school students to the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments.  Afterwards, the Justices meet with the students for approximately 30 minutes to talk about law-related issues of interest and to answer questions. Briefs, a case summary and other information about the Court are sent to the students prior to their visit. Constitution Day at the Center for Civic Education -

Free lesson plans for teaching about the US Constitution on Constitution Day.  Broken down by age/grade groupings.



Constitution Day Resources - Constitution Day is September 17th, and a new law passed by the US Congress compels public education institutions to teach about the US Constitution each Constitution Day. Browse resources for teaching the Constitution and to order pocket Constitution guides...

Constitutional Rights Foundation -

Contains free lesson plans on civic education.  Also provides links to programs, events, and publications.

Free lesson plans available.  Access to programs, including Deliberating in Democracy.



Death Penalty Law - (Michigan State University) - A dynamic, balanced death penalty curriculum that uses an issue of great public concern to teach civic responsibility, group decision-making, and critical thinking. The death penalty in the United States has always been a controversial issue, and recent developments concerning the death penalty have once again returned the issue to the public sphere. This Web site and its accompanying materials are designed to assist both teachers and students in an exploration of capital punishment, presenting arguments for and against its use, as well as issues of ethics and justice that surround it.

Discovery School - (The Discovery Channels) - Provides innovative teaching materials for teachers, useful and enjoyable resources for students, and a store. The site is constantly reviewed for educational relevance by practicing classroom teachers, and has a HUGE links section.

Educast.com - This site delivers up-to-the-minute education news, Internet resources, and lesson plans directly to your computer.

Education Planet - A K-12 Education Web Guide helps teachers, students and parents find quality educational resources, including top Web sites and 16,000 lesson plans.

Education World - Search more than 120,000 sites, organized by content area. Education World also features weekly articles with related links that highlight lesson planning, curriculum, site reviews, school news, professional books.

Federal Courts -

The federal courts have lesson plans about the federal judicial system that teachers may use for free. Some of that material is included in this book and more is available on the “Courts to Classes” program page at www.uscourts.gov/outreach. It also may be useful to conduct one or more basic lessons—perhaps with the help of a judge or court employee—while the students visit the court. If you choose to conduct a lesson while at the court, talk to the judge or other court employee beforehand to make sure that they understand their roles in the learning process.

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts has also published a guide entitled Understanding the Federal Judiciary, which is available online at www.uscourts.gov/UFC99.pdf.



Federall Resources for Educational Excellence -

Teaching and learning resources from federal agencies.  Free federal resources for teaching that are broken down by area of educational interest.  Everything from art and music to science and history.



Harcourt School Publishers - Lots of teacher resources and opportunities to learn about Harcourt books.

Houghton Mifflin for Education Place - A well-designed K-8 curriculum site with extensive resources for students, teachers and parents. The focus of the site is providing activities to related to company products, but all site materials are usable by any elementary school student or teacher.

Institute for Public Serivce and Policy Research -

The Institute for Public Service and Policy Research is an interdisciplinary research and public service unit of the University of South Carolina. Its principal purpose is to address current and emerging issues relating to matters of public policy, governance, and leadership through research, educational activities, publications and direct assistance programs. The goal of the Institute is to improve the quality of social, political, environmental and economic life, with a primary focus in South Carolina.



Justice Learning -

This Web site promotes civic education in the real world. The site includes a breakdown of the Constitution as a guide in understanding the Constitution, includes teaching materials to include numerous lesson plans and a fabulous glossary on democracy terminology.



Kids Count -

Kids Count data provided by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.  Includes research data both nationally and by state regarding the well being of young people.  An excellent tool for teachers and parents writing grants.



Landmark Supreme Court Cases -

This site was developed to provide teachers with a full range of resources and activities to support the teaching of landmark Supreme Court cases, helping students explore the key issues of each case. The "Resources" section features basic building blocks such as background summaries and excerpts of opinions that can be used in multiple ways. The "Activities" section contains a range of short activities and in-depth lessons that can be completed with students.



Law Day from the American Bar Association -

Local courthouses celebrate with mock trials, tours, legal advice booths and other activities. The American Bar Association has resources available to include a Law Day planning guide and additional Information on Law Day art, Law Day events and a Law Day store. Teachers may want to access the guide to connect with the Law Day. The guide also provides speaking points on various areas of the law, information on how to set up essay contests and order forms for publications.



Lightspan.com - Lightspan.com is a FREE education portal for educators, parents, and students, providing resources, research tools, and grade-specific activities

McGraw-Hill School Division - This site is loaded with free lesson plans, downloadable product samples, teaching ideas, all tied to curriculum. Be aware that this site is one big sales pitch!

National Constitution Center -

Resources to help you celebrate Constitution Day – the birthday of your government – featuring over 200 activities, lessons, books, DVDs and more from over 30 different providers.



National Geographic - Tools for teachers including maps, lesson plans, teacher discussion boards and a store.

New York Times Learning Network - Lesson plans and other resources centered around historical and current events.

Oyez Oyez -

Another great Supreme Court site. Gives summaries of many cases. Also includes oral arguments if you have "real audio." Allows search by subject matter too.



PBS TeacherSource - Offers daily updates to educational programming on PBS. The site also offers tips on teaching with technology and television and more than 1,300 standards-matched lesson plans and activities in every content area that can be searched by age levels.

South Carolina Clerks of Court -

Information on local Clerks of Court in order to schedule class visits to SC Courts in conjunction with classroom activities. 



Street Law Inc. -

National non-profit organization dedicated to providing practical knowledge about the law to school age children through a variety of programs including Street Law, Street Law for the SRO, and Parents and the Law.



Survival Guide for New Teachers - (U.S. department of Education)

Teach First Amendment.org - TeachFirstAmendment.org gives teachers and administrators:  free, practical teaching lessons; how-tos for starting a school newspaper; or broadcast station on campus; campaign ideas for getting civics back in schools.

Teachnet.com - Teachnet.Com Includes/ lesson plans, web links, interactive forums & mailing lists and a weekly email newsletter for teachers.

Teachweb.com - Lesson plans, classes, newsletters, and resources for math, english, science, social studies and computer teachers.

The America's Legislators Back to School Program -

The America's Legislators Back to School Program is an annual nationwide event that kicks off the third week of September and runs through the school year. NCSL makes available, free of charge, a publication and video resource materials for high school, middle/junior high school and elementary school students to be used by state legislators visiting classrooms in conjunction with the program. To request copies of the materials, please contact South Carolina’s Legislation Coordinator Clara Heinsohn with the Senate Education Committee at P.O. The Center for Civic Education -

The Center for Civic Education is a non-profit organization that runs such programs as We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, We the People: Project Citizen, and Foundations of Democracy.  Find free lesson plans, activities, and trainings here!



The Center on Congress -

This Web site has materials for teachers with interactive learning modules, importance on civic participation, rankings of voter participation by state, information on notable members of Congress and facts of Congress. This Web site truly can be used in the classroom.



The Civic Mission of Schools -

The Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools is a coalition of 40 organizations committed to improving the quality and quantity of civic learning in our nation’s schools. The national Campaign is based in Washington, DC at the Council for Excellence in Government in partnership with the Academy for Educational Development. They have resources, lesson plans, and strategies for implementing civic education within the classroom setting.



The Law Related Education Division of the South Carolina Bar -

This website is designed for Teachers, School Resource Officers, and Students to learn more about the law through an abundance of civic education programs including Mock Trial, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution,  We the People:  Project Citizen, Foundations of Democracy, Law for Teachers, Youth Court, Street Law, Community Works, and others.



This Nation.com -

A web resource dedicated to American Government and Politics.  Encourages civic engagement as well as provides lesson plans and an online textbook.
