Question: How many degrees do you have to have to be a teacher?

Answer: In order to become a certified teacher with the Arizona Department of Education, a teacher must have a bachelor's degree in either education or the subject matter they teach. Under extraordinary circumstances, the Department of Education will grant emergency certification to a qualifed person who does not have a four year college degree.

Although Arizona law (ARS 15-203) forbids requiring a teacher to obtain a master's degree, teachers must earn 12 semester hours of college credit or 180 clock-hours of approved professional development in order to renew their certificate. Since most school districts tie salary raises to additional college credits, continuing education is a constant reality for most teachers.
