Question:

Why is marijuana illegal?

Answer:

Something is illegal when laws are passed prohibiting it. Marijuana is against the law because there are specific laws which make it illegal.

To understand why certain things are illegal, we should understand two basic principles: (1) where laws come from; (2) why one thing, rather than another, may have a law against it.

Laws are rules which are enforced by a controlling authority or Government. In the United States, we have a Constitution, which is considered the highest body of law, or rules, in the land. The US Constitution creates three areas of government: 1. a President to oversee the country; 2. a Legislature to enact and create rules of law; and 3. a Court system to test and enforce the rules and laws enacted by the legislature.

Laws are usually made with the idea of protecting people or things. For instance, laws against driving too fast are safety-oriented and are intended to protect people. Laws against chopping down native cactuses are intended to protect the desert plants, rather than protecting people.

Before a law on anything is created, people must agree that a law is necessary. For some things, most people agree there is no need for a rule or law to control it. On the other hand, when enough people agree that a law is needed, then one may be created by the legislature. Legislatures are made up of representatives elected by people.

If something is determined to be dangerous, and people are doing it in spite of its dangers, then the legislature may create a law to prevent people from doing it and the court system may punish people who break the law.

So, marijuana, like most things which are illegal, has been determined to be a danger to the people, and because some people use it, sell it or possess it in spite of its dangers, laws were created by the legislature to prevent people from using, selling or possessing it and to punish people who violate the law.

I would just like to state for the record that i have smoked marijuana on average, every day of my life since the 9th grade. I am now 28, i have a very well paying respectable job, i live in my own house, i have two cars, and a long term girlfriend. I also have been personally researching marijuana since i started using it. It is far less harmful than cigarettes or tobacco. which collaborately destroy about 10 million lives per year. deaths cause by marijuana... Zero. it is ludacris for someone to tell me that marijuana is bad for me when they are addicted and smoke a pack of cigarettes a day

Marijuana is against the law because there are specific laws which make it illegal. This answers your question? i dont think so. the true reason that marijuana is illegal is because the government needs money. plain and simple. The government makes billions of dollars each year by the morally reprehensible prosecution of individuals who choose to use a plant that occurs naturally in the wild. america used to be the home of the free. now it is the home of powerful tyrants who run the country the way they want it, not the way the people want it. it discusts me to see what has happened to america

all i would like to say about it is this. man made cigarettes, which kill 660 million a year. man also made alcahol, which kills 200 some million a year. yet they are both perfectly legal. God created marijuana, which has not yet attributed to a single death. yet it is the most focused on for prosecution than all other crimes combined. it is hard to beleive but it is true. these days i am in total awe of how people view marijuana as 'evil' or 'wrong'. The Lord made marijuana, are you telling me that The Lord is wrong, that God is evil?

Marijuana should be completely leagle, cigarettes and booze break through the blood brain barrier, marijuana does not. Marijuana can be used to treat people who have high blood pressure, gluecoma, anarexia, it can be used to make gardening twine, clothing, jewlery and many other things. Poison ivy can hurt me if I smoke it lets make that illegal, I can go out get drunk and step in the car and kill someone lets make booze illegal. GOVERNMENT!!! lets think about it, get some scientists to make good marijuana and market it, lets get out of national debt, put a tax on it. This is not a game.
