What are the consequence for a DUI?

DUI is a very serious offense and depending on the situation, numerous other laws may come into play. However, for this answer I will provide the simplest form of DUI.

For a first offense of DUI, a person would face a fine up to $400 or 48 hours to 30 days in jail. SC Code 56-5-2940. Additionally, the person's driver's license will be suspended. SC Code 56-5-2951. But, the most costly penalty is that the person's insurance company will be notified and the person's car insurance rates will increase significantly.
