Larceny is the legal term for theft or stealing. If the value of the things stolen equals $1,000 or less, we call that petit larceny which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and up to $500 in fines. If the value of the things stolen is more than $1,000, we call that grand larceny, which is a felony. If the value is between $1,000 and $5,000, a court can impose up to 5 years in prison and a fine. If the value is $5,000 or more, a court can sentence someone to a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
