Anabolic Steroids

Some people take steroids to build up strength and athletic ability.  While steroids do build muscles, they also damage the liver, heart, and reproductive system.  They can also cause people to become depressed or aggressive.  It is common for people who have taken steroids to have heart attacks and strokes because of steroid use even if they stopped taking steroids years ago.  Steroids are legally available in some situations, but only by prescription.  It is illegal to possess steroids without a valid prescription.

If someone was in possession of 10 or fewer dosage units of steroids, he or she would be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine for a first offense.  For a second or subsequent offense, the maximum penalty increases to 1 year in jail and a $2,000 fine.  S.C. Code Section 44-53-1530(2).

If someone was in possession for more than 10 but less than 100 dosage units, he or she would be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail and a $2,000 fine for a first offense.  A second or subsequent offense brings a maximum penalty of 2 years in jail and a $3,000 fine.  S.C. Code Section 44-53-1530(3).
