What is an adoption?

Adoption means that someone other than a biological parent legally becomes the parent of that child. This usually happens where a single parent later remarries and the step-parent wants to become a full parent. This also happens where a child's biological parents give the child up for adoption. When a child is adopted, the adoptive parents take on all the rights and responsibilities to the child. The biological parents no longer have any legal rights or responsibilities to the child.
