Yes. All students from the ages of five to 17 are required by South Carolina law to attend school. Also, pregnant students, married students and students who are unwed parents must attend school until they reach their 17 birthday. Every student is expected to be at school everyday, unless he or she is sick or otherwise excused. S.C. Code Section 59-65-10.
If a parent fails to send their child to school, they can be fined $50 or even sent to jail for 30 days. S.C. Code Section 59-65-20. However, if the parents have tried to get the child to go to school but the child still does not attend, the child can be declared delinquent by a family court. S.C. Code Section 59-65-70.
