Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think that kids should be allowed to have jobs because its not fair that i can't get a job to pay for myself, when my parents yell at me to get a job. And just think, if 13 year olds could get jobs, mabey some homeless 13 year old could get a job and stop living on the streets.

Okay guys I have read alot of your comments and I think it is completely unfair that you cant get a job until 14. I was excited when I turned 13 to get a job, but then they layed the whole Child Labor Laws thing on me. We are NOT children anymore, and we deserve respect. I think that you should be able to get a job at 13. Most of us are capable people, are we not?? I say that we, as one, need to stand up for ourselves so they'll stop treating us like small children. Alot of us(including myself)are stuck at home with nothing to do BECAUSE of the Child Labor Laws. It's time we did something!!

i think that if a 13 year old is capable, and responsible enough they should be able to have some job opportunities. but their qualification should depend on maybe their G.P.A, no 3.14 or over, no deal. so there's control over the situation and some more modivation for us to well in school.
