Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think 13 year olds should be allowed to work becuase not everyone has a lot of money and most kids whose parents don't have a lot of money make their kids buy their own stuff and all i can do is babysit and thats not a steady riliable job so it would be great if i could get a job bagging food or something so i could get a little more $$$!

TOTALLY! Yes, kids at the age 13 should be old enough to get a part-time job! They need the responsiblity and it'll keep them off the streets!

I think that 13 year olds should have a job as the adults because we need something to do and to get money so we can go shopping and stuff. Instead of getting in trouble for money we can go do a job that is legal and get money for it. Instead of stealing the real thing 13 year olds can earn the real thing. Its not only the 13 year olds thats doing it. The young adults are doing it too.

I feel that 13 year olds should have jobs because it shows how to be more responseible and learn how to make it in the modern society. Also on the hand we might want a litte money on the side and quit asking as parents for it.
