Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

i being 13 thinks that the law should be changed because now that the summers are longer we have nothing to do and a summer job could be for a good cause. also some parents might need help with school suplies and would it not be great for us to be able to put our share in. so i say that the law should be changed and let us work and earn money.

I really want a job and i think its really stupid that people a year older with the same knowledge we most likely have cannot get jobs. ireally want one for many reasons. Like to earn money, have experince, and i think if 13 year old had jobs we would less likely to be introduced to drugs and take them. It just plainly does not make sense why we cannot work!
