Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I feel that 13 year old teenagers should be able to have jobs becuase half of us out here are more responsible than half of these 14,15,and 16 year olds and are desperate to make our own money. For example i make straight a's and b's never made a c in my life (knock on wood) and my cousin who is 17 make d's and f's and doesnt want to work his parents have to force him and here i am sitting at home while everyone is at work wanting to get out there myself and work.Alot people dont understand that it is hard out here in the streets today with drugs, gangs, etc. I would do anything to get a job
