Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

The problem I see with the Child Labor Laws is that, for example, I want to go to college, but prices for tuition and dorm rooms are so high right now, i want to get a head start on earning the money I need. I agree that working at fourteen is slightly more mature than 13 year olds considering they are in high school already, but, many 13 year olds are already in high school and far more mature than 14 year olds. I believe that we should lower the child labor laws, this way we could work. Most kids dont want to work anyway but for the kids that do, it's not fair for them to wait.

I think that the age for a kid to start working should be 13 not just because i am 13 but because its the age that we turn into a teen. I was waiting so long to become ateen because yuo finally get to work and now I hear you have to wait till you're 14!?! Seriously whats the difference, 1 year??? They should make all teenagers able to work not 14 and up. When i turn 14 15 or even 50 I will still think that 13 year olds should be able to work. But hopefully 13 year olds should be working by the time i am 50. Thanks 4 listening to what I have to say.
