Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

im 13 years old.. and i want a job to earn money for things i want.. but all my options are mowing lawns and baby sitting.. but i need something i could do day after day.. and im trying to save up money for a car for when im 15.. its not right that a business should be fined for letting a 13 year old working there.. teens need money to work.. my parents arent giving me money as much as they used to, to buy stuff for myself.. so i have to depend upon myself to get what i want.. just let us kids get work if we WANT it!

I think that wether or not u can get a job should not be determined by you age that is so stupid because there are 13 year olds that are more mature and harder workers than some 14 year olds. ur age is just a number and that shouldnt be something that keeps u from helping ur parents and ur self

I am 13 years old! I want a summer job before the summer is over! I am sick and tired of this law ! Wouldn't you rather us have a job, than hanging out on the streets doing voilence? I wrote a letter to George Bush, and I am going to send it today! Obviously, Bush doesn't care, because he would have been changed the law and I quote " We 13 year olds need jobs. We don't want to be snobs!" So if you see this, please find a job for me. Thank You!
