Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I am a very responsible 13 year old who is seeking responsiblity by working. Why is it that when kids my age are trying to be responsible, the adults make it hard and then when we are just sitting around, they call us lazy? Who's really confused?

Hey I am 13 and I think we should do something for them to change the law. I mean my mom keeps complaining that im a lazy bum and do nothing around the house. I said to her I would do something if I had a job. I also need money and everytime I ask my mom for money shes like I Dont Have Any. So I think we should do something about it! A lot of people think we are not responsible. We could show them that we are. So lets think of something 2 do something about this.

I think the age requirement for a job is just right. Although lots of kids on here say they want a job, you still have to be mature enough both intellectually and socially, to be able to identify and communicate with your work partners. At age thirteen, one has not dealt with high schools pressure, let alone the pressure of a job. Fourteen provides one year of high school to develop in all aspects. The government is just watching out for us to make sure we actually do have a childhood, and do not get taken advantage of. Besides, there is always jobs like baby sitting!
