Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I may not be 13 yet but I still think 13 year olds should have jobs. What is the point of being a teenager if you cant have a job yet? Might as well say 14 is a teenager. But anyways, even though we are still young we should still have the oppurtunity to make atleast 2 dollars a hr somewhere. We can do anything a 14 yr old can do but better because we are younger. If we learn something earlier, we will be better in the future. Being a teen should have new oppurtunties like going shopping alone, going out alone, and being able to have a job. I know that laws protect but this law shouldnt hurt us

I don't see why 13-year olds can't get a job. I will turn 14 in a couple months but still. This is something trying kids as an adult. The law doesn't treat kids like an adult, yet when something happens, the kid is "suddenly" having adult status in court. I think that if someone is mature enough, they could do a good job.
