Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?
Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I am 13, but I can't get a real job. I could easily do any job that most adults can. If it is a job that involves thought, it would be easier. Yes, many places wouldn't hire a 13 year old even if they were allowed to, but I would try hard to find someone that would hire me. A high school student should be less likely to be able to hold a job because there school is rougher and their parents still support them. A 13 year old has enough spare time to hold a job, and not as much to worry about for school.
