Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I agree with you. I need a job this summer, but that doesn't mean i'm gonna babysit my little sisters the whole time. If they ever let us work, it had better be a real job where we get real money, not an IOU!

I really think we should be able to get the same jobs as 14,16 year olds. I mean, we are all teens, right?

I think it is unfair that 13 year olds can't have a job. We need money too. We are teenagers just like 14 year olds. I have nothing to do all summer, but to watch T.V. . When I want to go somewhere I need money and I don't have it.
