Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I am 13 years old and I do believe that 13 year olds should be able to get part-time jobs. Yes I do babysit and it is ok but I am babysitting my little sisters!! If I am going to babysit, I want to babysit a child from outside of my family. My Mom doesn't want me to go into other people's houses that she is not familiar with. Couldn't I babysit someone she knows! I want a job where I can get real money. My Mom doesn't pay me amd I do it for free! I wish I could have a part-time job after school or even just a summer job!

I think that 13 year olds should be allowed to get a regular job, not babysitting because most of the time people who want babysitters want 18 year olds to babysit. Most of the time I sit for my relatives for free not for money. Some 13 year olds do not get allowance. If they do then it's probably only about 5 dollars a week, that is not enough money to do anything. 13 year olds should get minimum wage. What is so wrong about a 13 year old getting a job. Most 13 year old girls and boys are mature. Some 13 year olds are more mature then some of the older teenagers that get hired at a minimum.

I think a thirteen year old should have a job too because they can buy their own things and we don't have to ask our mothers for anything.
