Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I THINK THAT TEENS THAT ARE 13, LIKE ME, SHOULD BE PERMITTED TO HAVE A JOB BECAUSE SOME OF US ARE REALLY WILLING TO WORK HARD AND EARN MONEY. BY NOT LETTING 13 YR OLD HAVE A JOB, TEENS BECOME DESPERATE TO HAVE THIER OWN MONEY SO THEY GO OUT AND SELL DRUGS OR DO OTHER ILLIGAL THINGS. I REALLY WANT/NEED A JOB CAUSE I HATE ASKING MY MOM FOR MONEY KNOWING THAT SHE PAYS THE BILLS!

all you people how are 13 are complaining about jobs. Try being 15 and not being able to get any job besides working on a farm. Farm work is the only thing i can get. I am in high school and i need money and farm labor isn't cutting it. 15 year olds definately should beable to have more job oprotunities. You kids who are 13 are to irresponsible to have a job anyways. Most of you want money but once you start working you are going to hate it and are going to want to quit just like me right now.

I THINK 13 YEAR OLDS SHOULD BE ABLE TO WORK BECAUSE WE ARE OLD ENOUGH AND WE ARE RESPONSIBLE AND WE WANT TO DO FOR OURSELVES BECAUSE WE ARE MATURE ENOUGH AND WE KNOW WHAT WE WANT AND OUR PARENTS CANT ALWAYS PROVIDE IT FOR US.
