Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

Kids under 14 should be able to get jobs! Some people are stupid enough to even try to smoke in 7th grade but getting part-time jobs would be nice for young kids who are mature and do or attempt to do well in school. I would like to do something for myself instead of my parents. Getting a job earlier also builds up responsibility because you have to be on time and be good at what you do! The government should change the law to 13 because so many kids want jobs to support themselves. Parents always spend money on you, and it should be time to pay them back!
