Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

ok I am 13 and i agree and parents are always saying "show that your responslible".well if you would let us have jobs at 13 we could show you!but unfortantly the law prohibits that and honestly you employers would love to have us we would attract more younger people to your establishments and also a plus for you we really dont care about how much we just need some extra cash for our needs because our parents aren't just going to give us money out of no where thier response would be "does money grow on trees go get it off our 'money tree' in the backyard"[and yes i hear that alot]

What if you're qualified for the job? I know I'm responsible. I watch over five children while my mother works four nights a week. They are ages one, three, seven, eight and ten. I know what I wish to be when I'm "older". Why can't I have local experiance for it now? The government makes no sense!
