Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

Hey! Im 13 aswell! And I am looking for a job! I have had a paper round, and a babysitting job, but they just don't pay enough! I do not know what to do, because no one thinks that I (as a 13 year old) am responsible enough. I also think that 13 year olds should have the right to work.

Personnaly i think most adults that make the laws dont realize that 13 year old kids need money to buy gifts for people and that the minimum age for employment should be 13 and not 14. We want money to!

I think it is very unfair that teenagers Aged 13 to 15 cant get a job in the weekend and after school if they wanted to. We may want a bit of extra money to put away for when we are older. Even if it means working long hours im not bothered
