Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

How do we have to be able to get a job. I heard we had to fill out something saying that the parent consents you to work. Also I think that is stupid that 13 year-olds can't work legally(except for your parents.). I want a job so I don't have to ask my parents for money and I can save up for when I want a car or when I move out and everything. So I think they should lower it so 13 year-olds and above can work. That way once you turn a teenager you have the option of working or not working. That is my honest opinion.

I dont understand why they won't let 13 yr. olds go out and get a job. I really need the money and I go to school full time.
