Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I am 13 years old and I will be 14 at the end of December this year. Their is no way to get jobs for kids my age, especially if you live in a town where everyone knows you. It is easier for boys to find a way to make a little money, because they like shoveling snow and mowing the lawn, usually girls down mow laws and stuff. New Jersey needs better job oppr. for teens! It isn't fair to us when people are telling us to get jobs and stuff, it isn't our fault people can't hire young teens!
