Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think this law is stupid. At the age of 12, you are classified as a kid, right? And at the age of 13 we are charged adult prices and everything, which classifies us as Adults. We are mature enough to do anything, and from my perspective, we do more than most adults do. School is like our "job". Why can't we get 2 "jobs" then. Isn't school supposed to teach us about the "real world"? Well, the "real world" is all just about "making" a living, which means you need a "job". From my perspective, school is harder then a normal JOB. We should be able to atleast work and start supporting our family
