Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

Ok im 14 and i used to totally agree with you! why wait.. but now that im 14 im glad that i waited. Its just like the issue of smoking/drinking.. there is an age limit for a reason.. because you can mature soo much more in just one year. and yes this is true! right now we are at a critical age where yes money is important but academics and sports should come first. Im not slamming your guys views on work, because i thin its great that you all are ready to take on responsiblity and a job. Because it is tough. Just try to understand from the other side of the view. Thank you!

hey everybody in here that's 13....i just turned 14 too and i wanted to get a little extra money when i was 13...but my parents told me "you have your whole life to work" so what's the point in starting earlier....if you really need money that bad then do something simple like mowing lawns or babysitting....even though it doesn't make that much money if you do it enough u could save up. i think that you should just live ur life to the fullest and hang out with friends while u have the chance to....u don't have to work all ur life...it may seem fun now...but after u have worked for about 20 ye

i think that the 13 year olds are mature and responsible enough that they could at least get a job like cashier if you are good in math and if you are tryin to get a little extra cash

i would like to have a job at 13 because i would like to earn money then to just get it when i ask for it. right now i vouleenter at 2 diffrent places, i love it. Also 13 year olds have to become more responsible and another way to incourage that is to make them work for stuff instead of giveing them what they want all the time. I think 13 year olds should be able to work for low income then at 15 when you get your working papers the place where you are working can give you a raise or you can find another place to work.
