Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

All I do all day is sit in my room because there is nothing to do because I'm 13. I can't go any where because my parents have other things to do. I think that if I could get a job I would have more fun and I wouldn't have to sit around and waste my time because I have nothing to do.

It's unfair that 13 year olds can't work. I certainly am responsible enough for small jobs as long as it doesn't take up too much time. I think it is good experience and that people should judge us by our abilities and qualities instead of just grouping us into a wide generalisation of '13 year olds - so they obviously must be incapable'. I am mature enough for a job and am not just seeking money - I want experience and it would be exciting. I'm not saying that all 13 year olds are absolutely capable of committing themselves to a job, so I think that we should be treated as individuals.
