Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

My friend and I are planning to build a half pipe in our back yard. The problem is I have no money! It's not going to be cheap building this. We are looking for jobs out there but this law makes it to where we can not work. That really ticks me off. We are teenagers now and we want to earn money. We have no way of doing so. Parents aren't going to shell out money everytime we ask for it.

I think that as soon as you 13 you should be able to work. My aunt supports 5 kids and she works at sonic. Therefore, we are broke. I am 14 years old and no one will hire me anywhere. So now I can't help out with paying anything and we are poor!

People dont see all the other things about you cause your to busy saying and i quot "ITS NOT FAIR" no if you were responsible you would start out by helping at home.or helping someone out wiht their garden or walking their dog and ask a resonable price to be paid like 5 dollers to water, weed and clean out their flower garden. or 5 dollers to walk their dog that exercise for you and a little bit of cash. also why not say 7 dollers and youll help clean their house. or why not just volenteer so when you are old enough to work it lookes good on your aplication.
