Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I am 13 and I think we should be able to get jobs if we want. It isn't fair to forbid us from working because we should be allowed to make our own money. It's actually doing something PRODUCTIVE, and I HATE child labor laws.

I am currently 13 and looking for a summer job, but can find nothing. Lawn mowing is something that the proffesionals do in my neighborhood and so I cannot make money that way. Nobody is willing to hire 13 year olds! People dont even bother to intervew you before saying no, as soon as the word thirteen comes up, they turn you down. I am frustrated and hope that I will find a job soon. Good luck to all the other who are also lookig for a job.
