Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think that 13 year olds should have jobs also because some thirteen year olds are more mature then people twice their age. What the point of stopping at age 14? I believe that everyone should be able to work. Just don't hire the person if they don't qualify for the job. Don't managers do that anyway.????? The people that think that 13 year olds shouldn't have jobs don't ever want to lend us the money to buy things and go places and always tell us to get a job but never find the conclusion that we can't!!!!!!! 13 year olds of all people are entering a teen world and should be independant!!!!!
