Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

WHY NOT LET 13 YEAR OLDS GET A JOB IF THEY APPLY OR COME TO YOU FOR AN INTERVIEW THEN TEY'RE OBVIOUSLY REDY FOR THE RESPONSIBILITY. I MEAN KIDS RELLY DO GET TIRED OF ASKING THEIR PARNENTS FOR MONEY AND THEN HEARING THEM NAG ABOUT IT. SO WHY NOT LET THEM MAKE THEIR OWN MONEY?

I quote Amber: "I think 13 year olds should be abled to get a job.your only ONE year younger than 14 and we need money too." Though you are only one year younger, that would mean that when you get that right twelve year olds would try to use that same exect excuse until they get the right as well. Your excuse seems to be lacking good reason.

I'm am currently at the age of 13 years old and I feel that I am more than ready to take on the responsibility of a job I will be 14 years old this year and although my parents have more than enough money to get me the things that I need they are not going to give it to me unless there has been a special occasion so in order to obtain the items that are needed or an average 13 year olds wants or some may call them neccesities but are not really necessary I need a job!!!!!

I think they should offer jobs for 13 year olds because kids need to spend money without asking their parents and i find that offensive just because we are not a certain age we cant work that makes me think that the government thinks kids are stupid and cant complete certain things just because we are younger i have been trying to make some money but its just to hard and if they lower the minimal working age to 13 the economy will grow as in more people spend money and that will be better for us and no harm will be done i think their should be a new amendments for working rights for kids.
