Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I believe that a Thirteen year old should be able to have a job because we have to start worrying about things like buying a car if your parents are not going to buy you one. It also helps by getting us used to having a job and what the working life is like, because i know alot of ppl that will be surprised and unprepaired for a job because their parents do everything for them.

I think they should have more job offers for teens who are 13. Just because we aren't 14 doesn't mean we can't get a job right now. Some teens need jobs more than others do and I think they should be able to get jobs too. Not all of us want to work at McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys,Checkers, White Castle, and etc. I know I don't.

i think 13-year-olds should be allowed to work. 14+ people aren't the only ones who have social lives/real lives that require moolah ($$$). parents don't pay $$$ for chores, do they? no! so what are we living off of? birthday, christmas, special occasion money! not fair! i mean, 14 year olds aren't even that much more responsible. i think the law should be 13 & in 8th grade. that is respectable. but this current law is indignant and unfair to those with low (babysitting $$ as in like $20 every so often) or no (no money) income! it should be changed immediately.
