Question: Do I need a marriage license? Why can't we just say our vows to each other?
Answer: In addition to being a promise between two people, marriage is a legal contract. If you do not have a marriage license, then the government is not going to recognize that you are married. Contracts are agreements that a court will enforce. You can make agreements on your own, but if it is not recognized by the state, then you will be unable to get help from the courts if you need it. Because the state is going to recognize marriages, it can say what is required to make a valid marriage.
