Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

Man it is so unfair that the people who don't want to ask for money from their parents can't get a job better than a paper route. In a year when I'm 14, my parents will be all over me about getting a job. The laws need to be looked over again to see how fair this really is. P.S.: Getting a job now gives practice for other jobs when we're older.

Hi. I am thirteen years old and i also believe that we 13 year olds should be able to work. They say that they don't want people to take advantage of us, but we are teenagers and we are able to look out for ourselves. Adults say we arent, but we know that we can. Not all 13 year olds are 13 in their minds. I wish that all teenagers were allowed to work because i really need the money and i dont like having to go to my mom every time i want to get clothes or food or anything like that. okay, i'm outtie.
