Question: I currently own a butterfly knife with a 4 inch blade. I know buttefly knives aren't illegal, but is it illegal for me to carry it at the age of 16?
Answer: Yes. A butterfly knife would be considered a deadly weapon, since it is designed for lethal use (under A.R.S. § 13-3101(A)(1)). You are not permitted to carry a deadly weapon without a permit (under A.R.S. § 13-3102(A)(1)). You must be 21 to obtain such a permit. (under A.R.S. § 13-3112E2). Exempt from this prohibition is carrying a pocket knife, which is different than a butterfly knife. (again, A.R.S. § 13-3102(A)(1)).

Yes, a butterfly knife is a deadly weapon in AZ. They are legal to own. I'm not sure who is providing the official "answers" in this section, because they don't seem to know the Arizona Open Carry provisions of the laws. Minors can never carry CONCEALED weapons; you must be 21 to obtain a CCW (carry concealed weapon) permit. BUT, anyone (except convicts & non-citizens) can carry non-firearm weapons openly in a visible belt holster per ARS§13-3102.F "Open Carry" means it's obvious. If covered by your pocket or shirt, it is CONCEALED. Never try to carry where prohibited, like a school.
