Question: What is the punishment for making a forest fire?
Answer: Burning the lands of another is a felony in South Carolina and carries a penalty of up to 5 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines. S.C. Code Section 16-11-170.
However, if the fire spreads to any type of building or structure, that would change the offense from burning the lands of another to arson, which is a very serious crime that can result in longer prison sentences and bigger fines.
